National Board Opportunities

Teaching Channel Teams Project:

In the summer of 2013 Oceanside Union Free School District won a Leadership

and Innovation Grant from the National Board for Professional Teaching

Standards. The Leadership and Innovation grant offered teachers in their 1st, 2nd, or

3rd year of teaching, mentoring and feedback on effective teaching from National

Board Certified Teachers. NBCTs watch video from their Residents via classroom

video posted on the private, Oceanside Teaching Channel, TCH Team.

When giving feedback, NBCTs use Charlotte Danielson rubrics with correlated

questions from the National Board Certification portfolio and existing videos from

the Teaching Channel to guide their observations of the new teachers. One goal of

the grant was to enhance and to develop the practice of the untenured teachers so

that they become more effective, address their formal evaluations with confidence

and professionalism, and improve student learning in their classrooms.  Another

goal of the grant is to give the NBCTs an opportunity to become change agents in

the district.  Most of the NBCTs in Oceanside are leaders in their disciplines

spearheading initiatives, new classes, afterschool clubs and activities, and teaching

professional development classes. This grant aims to open up opportunities for

accomplished teachers to enhance teacher practice through video, reflection, and

peer support.  The district has since, with the help of the OPDC, brought together

the NBCT Coaching and the NYS Mentoring program. Today, both programs run

in concert, and all NYS Mentors get the same coaching training as NBCTs.
